And here we go: at 9AM CT, or 10AM in New York City where the real Americans live, Sprint will be making public its plans for the Palm Pixi. You know, Palm’s 2nd smartphone to run its lauded WebOS platform. The announcement should bring pricing and availability so check back then ya hear. If you’re lucky, we even might get some Verizon news too.

[Thanks, Jocelyn]

CE-Oh no he didn’t! Part XLV: Symbian’s Lee Williams rips into Android, implies Google is evil (video)

October 26, 2009 at 8:54 pm | Posted in Marketing & Ads | Leave a comment

Strap yourselves in, folks, we’re about to launch the Mudslinger 3000 again and figure out if any of it sticks. Lee Williams of Symbian starts off with a few attack volleys relating to Google’s “fragmentation” of UI elements, and the resultant closed APIs being a nightmare to code for. With so many divergent UI elements and styles, he argues, developers would suffer, and the consequence would be a less vibrant app ecosystem. His major gripe with Google’s mobile OS, though, has to do with the pervasive “cookie-ing” of customers, which raises the specter of privacy concerns. When asked directly by our buddy Om Malik whether he considers Android “more evil” than Apple’s iPhone OS, Williams replied:

“I don’t view Apple as evil, they’re just greedy… Google, come on! When you have to say in your motto that we’re not evil, right away the first question in my mind is, ‘why do you have to tell me that?'”

All this must be tempered by the knowledge that Android is set to overtake large swathes of the mobile OS space, and some retaliatory trash talking is probably to be expected from the incumbent smartphone leader. Om does ask another sage question, in querying why Williams thinks companies are making such large investments into Android, and you’ll find the answer to that and much more in the video past the break.

ZFS open source project abruptly shuts down, Snow Leopard weeps icy tears

October 26, 2009 at 7:01 pm | Posted in Marketing & Ads | Leave a comment

The on-again / off-again love affair between Apple and ZFS seems to be all but over, with a brief but potent message on the Mac OS Forge project site stating the following: “The ZFS project has been discontinued. The mailing list and repository will also be removed shortly.” If you’ll recall, the implementation of the ZFS file system within Snow Leopard server was so close to happening that Apple actually published it as a feature of the forthcoming OS back in June of 2008. Now, however, all hope has presumably been lost. We’d bother explaining the rumors behind why all of this has suddenly crumbled, but honestly, will knowing the reasons really help the pain? No, no it won’t.

IREX 8.1-inch DR 800SG e-reader now listed at Best Buy for $449

October 26, 2009 at 1:37 am | Posted in Marketing & Ads | Leave a comment

You know what happens when you realize your $399 price point can’t compete with the International Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook at $259? You jack it up by $50 and hope people view it as an ultra-premium product, that’s what. IREX’s DR 800SG e-book reader, which admittedly comes with a salacious set of specs and features, has just landed on Best Buy’s site as promised. The problem? It’s $449, and not the $399 that we’ve been hearing for a little while now. ‘Course, Best Buy has been known to inaccurately post MSRPs before the product actually hits the shelves (it’s backordered for “one to two weeks” at the moment), so we suppose anything could happen. So, anyone snapping this up? Wait, who let the crickets out?

[Thanks, Tom]

Vuzix Wrap 310 video eyewear ships out to virtual big-screen lovers

October 25, 2009 at 11:55 pm | Posted in Marketing & Ads | Leave a comment

Vuzix’s $249.95 Wrap 310 is probably the least hideous / heinous of the video eyewear options on the market today, and while it’s still take a few bottles of Jack to get us to rock these with a smile, those who are just high on life can now make a set their own. In case you’re forgotten, these things provide a virtual 55-inch screen in front of your eyes, and there’s support for iPod / iPhone connections as well as basic sources such as DVD players and the like. And hey, there’s also the possibility that these could be used in augmented reality applications in the future, so feel free to considering this some sort of futuristic investment. Just like those Y2K preparedness tapes you bought in ’99.

Mamiya’s DM22 is a medium format digital camera for the Walmart type at sub-$10k pricepoint

October 25, 2009 at 7:51 pm | Posted in Marketing & Ads | Leave a comment

It can’t be easy being the cost-cutter in a game as insanely expensive as digital medium format cameras, but after teaming up with Phase One for a $5990 medium format shooter (without lens), Mamiya is taking its own crack at the market with the $9,995 DM22. It comes with a Mamiya 80mm f/2.8 D Series lens, has a 22 megapixel sensor and can pump images straight out over FireWire if you think your RAW files are too good for a lowly CompactFlash card. It’s also being introduced with a $14,990 sibling, the DM28, which has a 28 megapixel sensor and handles higher ISO shots.
